hazardous waste classification based on the solvent purchased for this use. If determined to be
hazardous waste, the rags and other contaminated debris will be accumulated and stored on-
site for disposal in a hazardous waste landfill. If these wastes are not hazardous, disposal will
occur in the Type I or II sanitary landfill located off-site.
5.8.3.6 Welding and Cutting Supplies
Welding and cutting supplies consist of welding rod and gas cylinders. The part of the welding
rod that contains flux will be consumed during the process and the remaining metal tip will be
disposed in the trash as non-hazardous waste. The gases will be used in the shop, PUG Plant,
and in the field as needed for equipment maintenance. They will be safely stored, transported,
and handled on site to avoid damage and leaks. The gas cylinders will be delivered by a vendor
and the empty cylinders will be removed by the vendor for reuse. Approximately 20 gas
cylinders are expected to be stored or in use at any one time.
5.8.3.7 Paints and Thinners
The volumes of paints and thinners will be controlled through purchasing procedures that target
buying only the volumes needed so that storage and handling of leftover materials will be
minimized. If possible, non-toxic paint materials will be selected, especially for indoor painting
projects, so that employee exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) will be minimized.
Paints and thinners will be delivered to the Mine Area via normal vendor shipments and current
expectations are that less than 100 gallons of each (paint and thinners) will be present in the
Mine Area at any one time.
The paints and thinners are expected to be delivered in various sized containers, ranging from
quart-size metal cans to 5-gallon plastic buckets. These paints may be in spray cans, but most
will be as liquids. Leftover paint will be reused at other projects in the Mine Area if possible.
Paint in spray cans will be used completely and the cans punctured prior to their disposal as
trash that goes to the Type I or II sanitary landfill. Small amounts of liquid paints and thinners
that remain in cans or buckets will be evaluated for hazardous waste characteristics and treated
in accordance with those results. Empty containers will be recycled as scrap or disposed off-site
in a Type I or II sanitary landfill.
5.8.3.8 Electronics Equipment
Electronics equipment will be used in the offices, warehouse, and shop for personal computing
needs. Electronic equipment may also be used in vehicles in support of mine and PUG Plant
operations. When purchases of personal computers, servers and printers are made, efforts will
be made to procure equipment that is built from least-toxic materials and that meets Restriction
of use of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) international standards.
Electronic materials that are no longer usable will be sent to a responsible electronics recycler.
If possible, a recycler that has achieved e-Steward certification as a responsible recycler will be
selected.
5.8.3.9 Conveyor Belt Repair Supplies
Use of conveyor belt repair supplies may be required in the crusher, trommel, and PUG Plant.
These materials often include glues and solvents that may contain hazardous constituents
which require special handling during use and disposal. Wastes generated from use of these
products – rags, empty containers, brushes, and other debris will be evaluated for potential
classification as hazardous waste. If determined to be hazardous, the wastes will be collected,
accumulated, and stored on-site, and disposed of at the off-site hazardous waste facility. If
determined to be non-hazardous in their waste form, these materials will be included in the trash
that is sent to the off-site Type I or II sanitary landfill. The volume of conveyor belt repair
supplies stored and used on-site is expected to be less than 5-gallons at any one time.
